January 10, 2017 was a red letter day for the World Cup – the biggest football tournament on the planet. FIFA confirmed what everyone expected: From 2026 the World Cup will feature 48 teams.
For the next two editions of the World Cup, in 2018 and 2022, there will be 32 teams before it all gets a lot bigger.
Gianni Infantino makes his mark
There now seems little doubt that FIFA president Gianni Infantino has made his mark on the World Cup, in the style of Sepp Blatter, his predecessor.
Not only will this see more member nations take part in the World Cup but is also expected to increase revenue to football’s world governing body by a whopping $1 billion.
Internal FIFA reports have suggested there will be 16 groups of 3 teams with all group matches to be decided on penalties.
