Luis Suarez was many people’s pick for the Ballon d’Or – even though Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann were the ones who eventually ended up on the podium – but looking at these stats, Suarez probably should have been up there.
Suarez is the top scorer across the top leagues in Europe – when you take goals in each league into account and only those goals.
Cup competitions do not count, nor do international goals.
That’s according to IFFHS, who counted up all the times the ball hit the back of the net in La Liga for Suarez, and found he beat out players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gonzalo Higuaín.
The list
1 – Luis SUAREZ (FC Barcelona) 40 goals
2 – Zlatan IBRAHIMOVIC (Paris SG) 38
3 – Gonzalo HIGUAIN (Napoli SSC) 36
4 – Cristiano RONALDO (Real Madrid CF) 35
5 – JONAS (SL Benfica) 32
6 – Eran ZAHAVI (Maccabi Tel Aviv) 31
7 – Robert LEWANDOWSKI (FC Bayern München) 30

Zlatan has his own list to win
Of course, Zlatan Ibrahimovic only needs two goals to beat out Lionel Messi for the most goals in all domestic competitions in 2016 – with Zlatan currently on 50 and Messi on 51.
